The question is whether this new Zeiss, and the R2a -3a will give the handful of folks who need/want Leica-like quality an option. But, again, my contention for some time has been that Leica has been kept afloat by the fact that they have been the only rangefinder game in town. As we know from Leica's only financial reports, the Leica SLR effort has been a money loser. -----Original Message----- From: lug-bounces+bdcolen=earthlink.net@leica-users.org [mailto:lug-bounces+bdcolen=earthlink.net@leica-users.org] On Behalf Of Frank Filippone Sent: Sunday, October 03, 2004 9:57 PM To: Leica Users Group Subject: RE: [Leica] Re: New Zeiss Ikon I was brought up on Contax RF cameras. They are truly great. But I do agree with the theory that Leica would have had to perform to a much higher standard, if there were real competition out there for the past 40 or so years ( since the Nikon SP died.) The lenses are not the issue here, it is the body. Nikon and Contax made really heavy cameras. The Leica were much lighter. Nikon and for that matter, Canon, were real innovators in the last years of RF life. Competition spices it up for all of us. But the reality is that Leica IS the only choice now, for all practical pupposes. Hexar, Cosina, Nikon ( S3), and Contax are really only skimming the market of Leica. Now about that customizeable M that you always wanted....... the one with the Panda colors on a Red Moroccan goat leather body with M6 rewind and M3 crank, and of course, the M3 rewind lever and lens locking ring.... doesn't that just reek of innovation?
