Yes, but that was to house a 4"X5" wet film pack, not a 24mmX36mm slice
of silicon, and other elements have gotten a lot smaller in the
intervening thirty-five years.

You mean the "Speed-Magney", The 4x5 polaroid back for the Nikon F.
Twice 
as big as the Nikon camera.
