I think the analogy between music and photography isn't appropriate because 
the composer is in total control of the process, including the addition of 
performance markings, sometimes so detailed that the conductor, like a 
Toscannini, 
can just take joy in just technical articulation of the orchestration. He 
meticulously insisted on playing everything on the page and got remarkable 
performances from his players. Sometimes I think Toscanni had the composer's 
ear. 

The negative, even when filtered in the camera, has its basic reference in 
the scene before the lens. That scene preexists, unlike the music in the 
composer's mind. The music is a total product of the composer's mind.
