Hi John,
in UK law the retailer is obliged to offer a warranty
on everything they sell and put right any problems,
including giving money back. Any manufacturers
warranty is addition to this requrement. Many people
do not know this and some retailers try it on, but the
idea was to prevent disreputable retailers selling
goods from makers known by them to produce poor
quality. The law was introduced in the 1970s and has
pretty well cleared out the dishonest dealers.
Strongly to be recommended.
