We're an odd household that subscribes to three newspapers (local, regional, national) plus the New York Times and Washington Post online. And NPR of course while I'm working. I've listened to "All Things Considered" since 1976 when I first encountered it in Charleston, S.C. TV news gets worse the larger the market. I think Sacramento's TV news isn't great, but it's a lot better than what I see when I visit the top 10 TV markets which are truly awful. I look Google's news page too because it often points to news sources I don't often see: those in the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
