Neil,

Typical US polling places have only a few voting booths, with a limited
number of workers at the polls. This year, there are additional checks for
identity of first-time voters.

When you consider the huge number of new voters in this election, and the
requisite bureaucratic tangles of verifying information, you can see why
there would be tailbacks at the polls.

Also, consider that most people tend to vote either first thing before work,
or directly after work. Think of the typical highway during rush hour--more
traffic than the highway can easily manage.

I've just been watching pictures of queues at polling stations on CNBC that
were snaking along streets for hundreds of yards. I've been voting in the
UK for 20 years and I've lived in several cities and I've never had to queue
to vote with more than three or four people in front of me.

What's all that about then?

Neil

Yes, indeed. I went to vote at 7:15, and was the 58th voter there (about
one every minute and a half). No lines, no hassle when I took this
picture.
