Hello Frank,

The 300 dpi thing is from the printing industry and screening. The rule of 
thumb (for scanning) was: dpi = 2x screen, i.e. 150 line screen = 300dpi etc.

Todays magazines can print with screens upto 250 lines per inch = 500dpi. 
That gives us file sizes up to 184megs (CMYK) for a double page spread (11.7 
x 16.7). Most of the magazines use 170 lpi=340 dpi.
