Probably what you got was "case binding," in which the covers and the spine are constructed separately and then attached to the book block, usually with adhesives. In a "proper" binding, the covers...or boards...are attached to the book block before the cover material is put on, making for a much sturdier and durable piece, albeit at a much steeper price for this labor intensive process. The leather actually represents a very small portion of a binding's cost. Nice job, but no gold leaf. Hand-made endpapers.
