zoom lenses are all variable aperture, whereas canon and nikon's pro
lenses are generally fixed aperture. i assume there's some optical
reason for this, and i'm just ignorant. i know canon increased the
size of its mount considerably when it went from the FD to the ED (eos)
mount, which has allowed it some breathing room, wheras nikon worked
within the constraints of the F mount. i've only handled an R a few
times, but i do seem to remember it having a big hole.
