Well, he was certainly bright and quick on his feet - and he woke the
country up after the malaise and ugliness of the 50s...BUT...He was not
the "liberal" the liberals would have use believe he was. And then there
was the Bay of Pigs, and a little mess known as Vietnam. To say nothing
of foot dragging on Civil Rights. One could also argue that to some
degree the excess of the 60s resulted as a reaction to the empty
promises and inspiration of his wonderfully inspirational rhetoric...But
damn, he was good on his feet - He looked and sounds so - Presidential.
And we were young then, and things seemed so damn hopeful.....

Same with JFK. He is my favorite president of my lifetime, probably due
to his charisma and honeymoon with the press, but recent history books
seem only to care about his escapades and questionable health.

It is interesting, however, how rose colored the glasses; Clinton's
average approval rating over his 8 years was a few points higher than
Reagan's - but to hear the tale told now, Reagan was the most loved
President since Lincoln, while Clinton was reviled. ;-)

I found him annoying as a president, but have been moved by his death.
He finished his terms & disappeared into the darkness without
bad-mouthing anyone during his retirement. People have always asked how
history will treat Reagan. History is treating Reagan better than just
about anyone since FDR, which surprises me but doesn't chagrin me.

As I read this I am watching the casket being carried into the Rotunda.
I have to say, no matter how one feels about Reagan - and I'm sure I
don't need to tell anyone I how I feel about Reagan ;-) - this is one
really moving ceremony. There aren't many ceremonial functions that we
do particularly well, but we do do extremely impressive send-offs for
Presidents etc....Of course I also couldn't help thinking as I saw Nancy
tentatively touch the casket as it made a turn past her, 'hope someone
got THAT shot.' :-)

Pardon me if this is slightly off topic but for those who might have
made it to Berkeley while Reagan was Governor:

email to fellow photog about "People's Park" and some of what's been.

"Yes, I mentioned it was 1969.. A good year for demonstrations. I
showed up there at about 5 pm. The place was crawling with poleeze. They
got guns. They been shooting and laughing and having a real time. Next
day the Nastynal Guard showed its ugly head.

Wished to hell I could find my negs of all that.
