Well if we're going to recommend writers, allow me to suggest Nadine
Gordimer, who, I believe, may just be the best living writer working in
the English language.

Phong - Elements of Style is the ultimate English grammar guide. Also
look for Thomas Kane's "The New Oxford Guide to Writing". And can I
suggest Raymond Carver's short stories? Simple, masterfully crafted,
great for discussion and dark like Robert Frank.
