Light perpendicular to the sensor would be focussed at infinity behind the camera rather than on the sensor, producing a completely fuzzy image. Whilst more telecentric lenses are probably better than conventional ones the publicity regarding light perpendicular to the sensor, which I beleive originated by Olympus in their advertising, is clearly wrong.
