After looking at my camera, the rails seem to do very little. There seems to be enough play in the spring that the back would probably compress the spring enough to hold the pressure plate down. The rails are very thin and I suspect that they are there primarily to prevent wear on the plastic back. If you get this one cheap enough, perhaps you could find a non-working one and cannibalize the back...
