Actually, believe it or not, there is some kind of electronic height 
checker...you can see the "Vehicles Overheight When Flashing" sign with 
lights that are supposed to blink to warn drivers if the truck won't clear 
the bridge.  Don't know if they were broken, or if the driver just didn't 
notice them.

That double-decker accident sounds horrific.  At least here, it was just 
things and not people.
