Am I wrong in thinking that that is an image of two East German soldiers, hands linked, jumping the barbed wire into West Germany - as opposed to something having to do with supposed homosexuality? LIFE was never a photo gallery - it was about stories. And yes, it was about stories about the "American way of life," and yes, Luce was a dedicated anti-communist cold warrior. -----Original Message----- From: lug-bounces+bdcolen=earthlink.net@leica-users.org [mailto:lug-bounces+bdcolen=earthlink.net@leica-users.org] On Behalf Of Slobodan Dimitrov Sent: Sunday, August 22, 2004 9:22 PM To: Leica Users Group Subject: Re: [Leica] Re: Shakleton Photos Faked And, needless to say, the reason d'?tre for LIFE, as an instrument of the Cold War, was the portrayal, or the selling, of a way of life. One of my favorites of LIFE's mistruths came from Arnold Newman. During a lecture/presentation he spoke about the famous Igor Stravinsky image at the piano. It was assigned by LIFE, but not used for the week it was done for. Apparently it got booted for another image, two East German soldiers holding hands, while on guard duty at the Berlin Wall.
