I speculate that he switched sometime around the Spanish Civil war. By the outbreak of WWII he definitely was shooting Contax. My guess is the 1.5/50 Sonnar and Contax viewfinder with the combined finder patch/viewer is what made him switch. Capa wasn't a gearhead and I can't picture him having the patience to fiddle with the squinty double windows on the Leicas. The Contax was also a lot easier to load; an important consideration, when someone is shooting at you.
