With primes, I find I start moving my feet, and once I get moving, I'll work a composition more. I'll also start to "see" the world through a focal length or two, helping me "pre-visualize" my shots (sorry for that loaded term). I just got a wide zoom for my D70, and after some initial confusion and experimentation, I find I now just use it like two primes: 24mm and around 14mm, i.e., equiv. to a ~35mm and ~21mm in 135 format.
