For dark low lit rooms, I use the SF20 on TTL, set the power to -1/3, f/5.6, use the diffuser. I'll have the camera at f4-5.6 @ 1/10-1/30th sec. Works for up to around 20 ft or so. Since the SF20 does not have bounce, you could use a Nikon SC-28TTL cord for off camera flash. Setting the power down to -2/3 or even -1 works too in dark situations.
