By about the 4th inning, most everyone was standing and cheering Rich Harden as he walked off the mound and strolled into the dug-out at the end of the inning (the guy was keeping it cool), and as each inning progressed, the number of people and the amount of cheering kept growing. Finally, when the Texas Rangers' Alfonso Soriano got a dinker single in the 8th, people stood and cheered Rich for literally minutes before the next batter step into the batter's box. Here is the sports writers version of what happened: "After Harden retired Hank Blalock to open the eighth, bringing him five outs from the first no-hitter in the Majors since Randy Johnson was perfect for the Diamondbacks last May, Alfonso Soriano reached out for a split-fingered fastball that splintered the barrel of his bat and resulted in a soft fly ball into shallow center field. Ellis, shortstop Bobby Crosby and center fielder Mark Kotsay all gave chase, but nobody really had a chance. The ball fell safely to the turf, and Harden's bid for history was over." It sort of reminds me of the "Mighty Casey at Bat" story, but different. Great experience! I still get goose bumps right now thinking how close he came and how dramatic it was to see. Jim
