The quote came about because for many years Groucho lived along the golf course owned and operated by the New York Athletic Club. He had tried to join the club a couple of times, but was always denied membership because he was Jewish. Finally, after many years, the club relented and offered Groucho a membership, and Groucho responded with the noted reply. You can find the whole story in Richard Anondile's (sp?) biography.
