Flatbeds can be useful if you shoot medium or large format - medium format scanners are expensive. If you shoot medium/large format as well as 35mm I'd buy a dedicated film scanner for 35mm and a flatbed for larger formats. Look at the models from Nikon and Konica Minolta.
