First, coated side should refer to the emulsion side of the film, the dull side. Pull out enough of the film from the canister to allow the tip of the leader to reach the end of the template. Place it in the template so that the pins go through the sprocket holes and the original short leader follows the contour of the template, though it is a bit wider. Then, with a sharp, narrow blade, start at the canister end and cut carefully along the template. It is important that you not cut through any sprocket holes. Doing so can cause small film chips to break off and get carried into the gearing of the advance mechanism. Place the tip of the leader solidly under the clip on the takeup spool, load the canister and takeup spool into the camera and press them in as far as they will go, and install the baseplate. I wind one frame to secure the end of the film, then tighten up the rewind knob to remove the slack. I watch to see that the rewind knob turns as I advance two more frames and then set the counter to one. Good shooting! Jim Nichols Tullahoma, TN USA
