However since it was already obvious that Leica would have had to explore new markets in order to survive, the only feasible avenue would have been to start making AF lenses in various mounts including EOS. This would have hurt Canon's lucrative L market. Those lenses are only a little better built than the better non L lenses but they get away with charging a small fortune for them. Optically they are rarely as good as Leitz or Zeiss. That's probably the reason Canon bought them. I'm also firmly convinced that Zeiss's move to offer F mount lenses is somehow connected to this.
