Hi Richard

If you knew what a giant database with millions of pictures and 
thousands of features Flickr is running, you would understand the 
(relative) slowness. It's a very dynamic website, growing faster than 
they can install new servers. Same for Smugmug which is not faster, 
IMO. pBase, a comparably lower tech'd gallery and community site, is 
sometimes faster, sometimes not (seems to depend on the traffic), and 
sometimes even offline for hours.
