I've used the Manfrotto superclamp with a Leica ball head and a Manfrotto 3D junior head, clamped to things such as tables, windowsills, posts etc. It is not as versatile as a compact tripod, but is very portable and (depending on what it is clamped to) provides very good support- more solid than a light or even not so light tripod. Better suited to a careful set up (studio mindset) than quick walk-about shooting.
