"The Little Rasters". -----Original Message----- From: Aaron Sandler [mailto:aaron.sandler@duke.edu] Sent: Monday, February 06, 2006 9:38 PM To: Leica Users Group Subject: RE: [Leica] Tina and Digital (was, Enlarger Don't worry, Marc, nobody really knows what a "raster" is...and most people who use a RIP can't remember what it stands for. A RIP is a piece of computer software that allows one to make beautiful black & white prints on an inkjet printer. (It controls the precise amounts of the various inks that the printer squirts onto the paper to make things look pretty.) It is unnecessary at the beginning stages...it's something to save for after the basics have been figured out. I believe the name derives from RIP OFF, because they used to cost something around the price of a mint M2 and that just doesn't seem right. Nowadays, if the urge strikes, once can download one for free and try it out for a while before deciding whether it's worth the $50 it costs. No longer such a RIP OFF, but the name persists for historical reasons. ;) Best, Aaron
