I think it's the uncoated glass, I have been playing with some  
cameras of that time and all of them show something in common. It's  
not only the soft contrast now that we are used to modern and  
ultracontrasty lenses.

As Mr. Puts said somewhere, the scientifically best lens might not be  
the better lens for your tastes. I fully agree.
