thanks for all the replies.  I got it working.  It does indeed need film 
in the camera and not just a strip of paper that I tried before.  It 
autoindexes just as my Rollei 3.5F, but it is not obvious.  I still 
can't see the sensor, but when the tape holding the film to the paper 
passed by, it clicked in and the counter moved to 1 and I was able to 
shoot.  I'll develop the roll and see how it worked.
