Thanks to everyone for your advice on battery recharge on a hiking 
trip. We are planning to do the section of the Appalachian Trail 
paralleling the Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway from Front 
Royal to Dale. Marc's suggestion to carry a Leica IIIc is a good one, 
and, in fact, I've used my venerable Leica IIIc on similar trips but I 
wanted to try digital this time as a challenge. The Olympus E-500 is 
light enough to backpack and I can edit my pictures every evening. I 
have 5 camera batteries. I guess I'll just start out with them fully 
charged and see how far I get. Fortunately the charger doesn't weigh 
too much. I also have four 1 GB Compact Flash cards. Each will hold 
about 200 high quality images. That's about the equivalent of 22 rolls 
of 36 exposure film. If I erase the bad ones every night that should be 
more than sufficient.
