Brian, given that quality control example, I'd be looking very carefully at 
magnification at the rear element and focussing helicoid
for any bonus steel particles provided at no extra charge, too.

I took the lens to Keeble and Shuchat in Palo Alto.
They claim to have sent it to Leica, and this is what it looked like when it 
came back.
It was heat-sealed in a plastic bag marked "Leica", and the sealed plastic 
bag was inside a black velvet trinket bag also marked
"Leica".
