Yes it is a very different animal from any SLR.  I have a 24 1.4L for my 
EOS gear.  I seldom use it because the AF, even as good as the EOS is, 
is just not quite good enough for me and that lens.  I do not hesitate 
to use f1 on my Noctilux...cause in low light nothing beats an M's 
focusing. 

As far as price, well I do not think I have paid under $4,000 for any of 
the pro digital bodies I have.  I was quite happy to hear the price on 
the M8, being Leica I was afraid the price would be over 6G and way more 
than I'd want to spend on one.  Would I like it to be more in the 2 G 
line, yes, but hey the thing from all reports is built like an M, that 
means quality and rugged.  Which is why I pay more for the 1D line of 
cameras in the EOS line.
