Some of my lenses don't even have DOF scales. I never look at the ones that do. Here's my trick. I get a new lens, and shoot with it some until I see what it can do. I get completely comfortable with it; shoot only with it until I know the characteristics by seeing the pictures. The nominal focal length, the angle of the hypotenuse, the phase of the moon, none of that stuff enters my head. I just learn what I can do with the lens. I do that by taking pictures.
