Ted, points well taken.  And in that spirit, let me present a few
alternate versions, "special for you."  You may be right that #2 is
better, but I like the way the shadows lead to the subjects in #1, so I
used it for illustrations.

These are the result of quick and dirty edits, most of them violate the
Nathan Wajsman Ethical Guidelines for Image Editing (which I normally
adhere to), and all would probably get me fired from the Charlotte
Observer, if I worked there, which I don't.  And it was fun. . .

Now, do any of these work?  And then, I'll get back to some probably
better images.
