Haha, that is the right way to go but I have no such camera. I spent all my 
money on Leica glass. I sold my 20D, maybe that was a mistake! ;-( I would 
rather shoot the race with an 800mm lens from the coffee shop across the 
street. ;-) 

  I kind of like some of my massed shots of Lance Armstrong running in the 
race. You get to see the fact that he was running behind a motorcycle 
equipped 
with a dozen cameras and surrounded by a huge entourage. It must be some 
sort of torture to have every step of your race covered by cameras. But, he 
is 
used to it...

I don't know, but when I photograph mass road races I'm using something near
400mm on an SLR that predictively autofocuses at 8 frames a second.  I find
a runner, wait until they fill 3/4 of the frame and fire 2-5 frame bursts
timed to when the front foot is coming down.  Usually, the first frame shows
them in the air, the second frame has the front foot on the ground and the
fifth frame has the front leg passing to the rear.
