Years back I ran into the same thing while comparing 50mms. The f2.0s 
alway performed better for me than the more costly 1.4s. That extra stop 
was an expensive proposition both in $$$ and quality of image. Some 
/photo authority/ once wrote about a series of test on current 
50mms.(1970s) The Nikkor f2 was said to be  one of the best lenses ever 
built.
