Eric, Photoshop reports the RAW files as 16 bit. That could mean they are 14 
bit too. However the files sure do act vastly superior
to 8 bit. I'm referring to RAW files, not jpegs.

To get back on point

The question I still have is:

Can you get the full dataset out of the 14bit chip?
The square root thing implies there is compression going on
(14bit capture - > 8 bit file 'non linear' DNG file -> reexpansion to16 bit
image file)

The article mentions something about using the 16bit option to get the full
dataset.

Is there a menu setting to get 16 bit DNG files out the M8?

All of this stuff aside, some of the printed results from the M8 look
stunning.
Mine is on order..
