Word is a proprietary format whose owner (Microsoft) refuses to document or 
explain, and to which it makes random changes whenever it wants. A document 
in Word format can only be used by someone who owns a modern copy of Word. 
Document interchange must be done in formats that are open, documented, and 
universal.

PDF is proprietary to Adobe, but they document it, license it to anyone, and 
give away free of charge the software that can read it. They also do not 
have 
a history of making incompatible changes to it.

When someone sends me a Word document I just delete the email and ask them 
if 
they can send it in a format that I can read.
