Are they avant-garde? Only time will tell... Some of the technique certainly would qualify as high craft at the bleeding edge. Many of the photo-illustrators could be called avant-garde illustrators. Yet, while all the above are working at a very high, and in some cases the highest technical and aesthetic level; within there genres they seem to be overlapping and having the same discussion. None stand out, for me, with that - wow, I've never considered or seen that before this moment. Wonderful set of links Philippe. Thank you immensely for your contribution.
