Subject: [Leica] ZM 50/2 planar ? now 50/1.4 asph

Hi Geoff,

Marty, you are saying that, in your experience"......At distances under
1.5-2 m the Summilux asph needs to be stopped down to f4 or
so to equal the 50/2 Summicron and related lenses in a number of ways.?
.........."
To equal the Summicron at what aperture, also f4 or f2? Only at the same
aperture would be directly comparable. Of course the 50
asph is definitely better at f1.4 than the Summicron at f1.4 ;-)

I mean at comparable apertures, of course. What I mean, specifically, is
that under 2 m the Summilux asph is not as good as the Summicron until you
get to f4. They are both then roughly equal until diffraction limits
performance from f11 onwards. Focused further out than 2 m the Summilux
asph is better than the Summicron at f2. It just depends what you want to
do. These performance indicators are from measurements too, not just from
looking.

Marty

Most people can only judge of things by the experiences of ordinary life,
but phenomena outside the scope of this are really quite numerous.
