It looks like you're doing GREAT without a book, but you could try and find,
"Painting With Light" by the noir master John Alton, and/or "Fred Archer on
Portraiture" that demonstrates 1940's lighting in general.  Or rent the old
films.  I think I was warped by them early on  ;-)

It helps to have fresnel spotlights with FocoSpots to get the look:
