Hi Peter,

The thing that really makes this shot work is the depth of field that allows
the viewer to step into the "sharp foreground" and carry on to infinity!
It's an invitation to walk right along the pier to the end.

 

If the walk tiles right at the bottom of the frame or the beginning
lampposts were soft it would screw it up taking away from the impact to walk
right in! 

Simply because out of focus elements in this type of scene create a visual
block.

 

Then add that the verticals are all correct and it becomes a well shot
professional photograph.

 

It's small things like using the correct aperture to create a deep depth of
field allowing the eye to go right into the picture and not be stopped at
the out of focus opening elements.

And of course in this case, making sure the verticals "are straight!"

 

It could make a nice "art photo" for a family or games room.
