It's to give students the opportunity to compete on their own level. On the other hand: it is a way to organise a competition without the necessity of market standard prizes. So sometimes it's a PR technique, too. Or -when reading most of the copyright rules coming with these competitions, plain theft. I assume that 'professionals only' is a way to set the bar. Not that every amateur is amateuristic, far from that, but there are a lot of hobbyists around, too. The majority even. From Leica though, it seems strange to only invite pros: how many of them using a Leica are left? And a lot of true amateurs using a Leica produce good work: a few of these reside on our gallery.
