Kyle: Let me second Red Rock Canyon. It's just west of town, and a whole
'nuther world. It's actually a complex of canyons radiating out from a
central "bowl" like spokes of a wheel. Each canyon is different. If your
time is limited, this is the place. The most scenery for the least
travel.

About 45 minutes north, then another 20 minutes east through some Indian
land is Valley of Fire State Park. If you want to see lots of *really* red
rock and some spectacular formations, go there.

As Doug mentioned, Death Valley is a couple of hours away. There is also
a ghost town called Rhyolite in the vicinity.

There are places in surrounding counties where "the oldest profession" is
practiced legally. I don't know how amenable to photography they are,
though. In fact, I don't know anything about them at all, except that I
remember signs advertizing their presence on the road between Las Vegas
and Death Valley. There are also some amusing signs warning travelers that
entrance to various nuclear test sites is strictly forbidden.

Enjoy your trip. Nothing in Las Vegas itself is real, but they do it so
well.
