100% in agreement.  The D1 was a fine camera when it came out.  Now it is 
older ( oldest?) technology, and considered obsolete by the most of the 
marketplace.

OTOH, it still does what it was designed to do... and if you can find a 
market for that, it still sells at market price.

BTW, you use a R8+DMR I think to do your birding thing.  Do you use 
Nikon/Canon at all for the same purpose?  ( Digital capture of bird images).

Given what you bought the D1 for it was a good choice.  The price you paid 
for it reflects not it capabilities but the much more limited market demands 
for its output (vs. when it was new).
