The rear of collapsible lenses have tensioning tines, or metal strips, which secure the lens tube to the mount when extended. In the case of the older Elmar, if this strip is sticking out, even a little, it can catch on the shutter. Also if someone forgets to put an adapter on these LTM lenses it can come very close to touching the shutter as well. Strange though. There is 1/2 inch clearance in the Summicron-M Now I must confess that even though I know there is no clearance problem, I have never put a lens in it's collapsed state on my M8. I believe in following manual instructions as well.
