I've heard about them fracturing suddenly when hit sharply, but I 
certainly haven't had any problems and you know how rough I am on 
equipment!!  My ancient Gitzo steel monopod eventually wore out but 
after many years of hard use.  The aluminum and carbon fiber ones 
just keep going.
