In a nutshell the Prius is not expected to be on the road as long as the
Hummer nor for as many miles because it's emerging technology likely to be
made obsolete by rapid technological development sooner than the Hummer,
which uses off-the-shelf GM components.

The Hummer's off-the-shelf components are easier and less energy-intensive
to recycle and are more likely to be re-used when the original vehicle they
were installed in is retired.  Also the Prius is driven fewer miles
annually so the energy cost of manufacture and disposal is spread over
fewer miles.

HTH.  I'm still not buying a Hummer.
