It's valuable to have extra information in the image file even if you can't
see it. For example, if the image has 64 bits per pixel and it is
underexposed, you can probably recover a good image from the shadows because
the information is actually there. Areas that looked all black will suddenly
show detail, because the extra bits are available when you need them.
