Upstairs in the cafe is a bit more relaxed with a flexible a la carte menu, downstairs is fancier with a prix fixe menu but they've always been willing to accommodate my veggie habits. There's a lot of other food in the area that's in the same league (though not strictly equal), either directly or in different ways. Bay Wolf is a similarly sized operation in Oakland that's similarly fancy and really good. Dopo is a small Italian restaurant that is currently my hand's down favorite place to eat, having had some incredible "ahhhh" moments there. Dona Thomas is a "white tablecloth" mexican restaurant that has incredible foodie credentials and killer tequila (why does the LUG always talk about single malt scotch and never about single batch tequlia/mezcal?). And at lunch time, go down and across Shattuck, turn left/south, go half a block and get a peice of pizza at the Cheese Board. Phew. So much food, so little time.... g.
