The old wides are generally much smaller while still providing good resolution. They also tend to be cheap so somewhat disposable. The old 50's have more flare which can be used to fill shadows or just give a unique signature. Also, the old normal to long lenses are not quite so sharp or contrasty wide open and make great portrait lenses. I will actually post some pictures again when I get back from latest trip.
